The Penghu South Four Islands - Dongji, Xiji, Dongyuping, and Xiyuping - were once staging posts for pioneers crossing the sea to Taiwan, and rich fishing grounds with abundant marine resources. Dongji Island, in particular, is only 30 nautical miles from Tainan, the then prosperous capital of Taiwan. Heavily influenced by Tainan at the time, it once bustled with countless ships and thrived. However, the inconvenience of maritime transport ultimately froze the development of the Penghu South Four Islands, and also froze their past appearance.
