Ride Green Transportation to Visit Tataka Peaks and Observe Taiwan's Top 100 Peaks

The network of trails formed by the Tataka Peaks The New Central Cross-Island Highway combines Provincial Highways 18 and 21, connecting attractions including Alishan, Dongpu, and Sun Moon Lake, making it an important route for central Taiwan tourism, with the Tataka Recreation Area being an essential stop. The Tataka area is easily accessible by public transportation. Within the recreation area, Nanxi Forest Road and Yushan Forest Road form a network of trails, with main entrances at the 106.1km and 107.6km marks of Provincial Highway 18 and the 144.3km mark of Provincial Highway 21. Near the three mountains commonly referred to by hikers as the Tataka Peaks, there is also Mount Dongpu, famous for its warm sunset glow and frequently included in hiking itineraries. Year-round Attractions in the Tataka Area The Tataka area offers different scenery throughout the four seasons. Spring begins with Taiwan cherry blossoms in late January and Yushan rhododendrons in early March. From May to November is the alpine flower season, featuring pieris, Yushan pinks, St. John's wort, and other colorful blossoms. In August and September, Yushan gentians dot the mountainsides, while in autumn and winter, Taiwan red maples dress the mountains in crimson. To promote ecological conservation, Yushan National Park will host "Alishan Ecology Lectures" and "Tataka Trail Guided Interpretation" in 2025. These free activities offer rich content to help visitors better appreciate alpine ecology. Energy-saving and Carbon-reducing Green Transportation To visit the Tataka Recreation Area, you can take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle "Sun Moon Lake-Alishan Route". The shuttle operates on a reservation system - remember to book your seats in advance! For details, contact the Yuanlin Bus Shuili Station (Tel: 049-2770041). Mountain weather and road conditions can be unpredictable, and Provincial Highway 21 implements nighttime traffic control between kilometers 110-144 (Caopingtou to Tataka section) from 17:30 to 07:00 the next day. It’s advisable to check relevant websites for road and weather conditions before heading up the mountain! Additionally, starting March 1, 2025, all garbage bins will be removed from the Tataka Recreation Area. Please practice Leave No Trace principles by taking all your garbage and leftover food back down the mountain! Also, please do not feed wildlife or leave food scraps that might indirectly attract wild animals. We hope that while exploring the trails and experiencing nature, visitors will consider reducing their environmental impact, allowing both humans and wildlife to coexist peacefully.
