The World's Largest Black-faced Spoonbill Wintering Ground: Witnessing the Perfect Balance Between Conservation and Tourism

Eco-friendly Habitats: Providing Black-faced Spoonbills a Comfortable Winter

The Black-faced Spoonbill is a migratory large waterbird. Each year from September to October, over 60% of the global Black-faced Spoonbill population migrates south to Taiwan with the northeast monsoon to overwinter, returning north gradually from March to April the following year.

To welcome these precious migratory birds, Taijiang National Park promotes Black-faced Spoonbill Season activities and actively creates eco-friendly habitats, encouraging fishermen to maintain low water levels and small fish in their ponds after autumn harvest to provide food sources for waterbirds.

Since this project began in 2020, participating fishermen have increased from 3 individuals with 10.8 hectares to 42 individuals with over 258 hectares in 2024. Eco-friendly fishpond products can use the "Black-faced Spoonbill Brand" trademark after review, promoting a win-win collaboration between ecological conservation and industrial development.

Ride the Taijiang Interpretation Shuttle to Track Black-faced Spoonbills

Starting in 2020, Taijiang National Park developed green transportation with the "Taijiang Interpretation Shuttle," eliminating transportation concerns for those interested in observing Black-faced Spoonbill ecology.

  • "Black-faced Spoonbill Line" half-day tour: Visit the bird-watching pavilion in the Qigu Black-faced Spoonbill Conservation Area to witness the spoonbills firsthand, and the Black-faced Spoonbill Hall at the Endemic Species Research and Conservation Center.
  • "Fish Village Experience Line" full-day tour: Besides observing Black-faced Spoonbills, participants experience fish processing at eco-friendly aquaculture ponds, understanding the symbiotic relationship between migratory birds and local fishermen.
  • "Black-faced Spoonbill Taijiang Line" full-day tour: Visit the bird-watching pavilion in the Qigu Black-faced Spoonbill Conservation Area and Liukou Visitor Center, and take a bamboo raft tour to explore the important wetlands at the Yanshui River estuary, observing mangrove ecology up close.

Understanding Black-faced Spoonbill Challenges Through the "Weekend Black-faced Spoonbill GO" Game

In 2025, Taijiang National Park launched a new activity, "Weekend Black-faced Spoonbill GO," a Monopoly-style dice adventure game centered around Black-faced Spoonbills, allowing participants to experience the birds' migration journey.

The game story begins with Black-faced Spoonbills born on Korean cliffs, simulating ecological crises they encounter during growth, including storms, natural predators, environmental pollution, and stray dog attacks. The activity combines fun challenges with vivid explanations, giving visitors deep insights into the ecological habits of Black-faced Spoonbills and Taijiang National Park's conservation work, receiving high praise from participants.

"Weekend Black-faced Spoonbill GO" is held one selected holiday each month during the first half of 2025, with 3 sessions per day and on-site standby available. Everyone is welcome to follow Taijiang National Park's official fan page and register enthusiastically!
