When Books Meet the Forest: A Wonderful Environmental Classroom on Yangmingshan

"Reading Yangmingshan" is an environmental education program designed by the Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters for various age groups from middle-grade elementary schoolers to adults. It features 31 thematic courses covering geology, ecology, and culture, with 7 to 11 selected courses implemented each year. Led by professional educators, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Yangmingshan's beauty through on-site exploration.

The courses not only convey natural knowledge but also inspire mutual assistance and care among participants through hands-on experiences. A staff member shared that when leading elementary schoolers up Qixing Mountain, though the children were tired, they showed the spirit of mutual help, with some voluntarily carrying things for others and some waiting for companions lagging behind, which was deeply moving. This exemplifies the value of outdoor environmental education: fostering emotional connections and a sense of responsibility through shared challenging experiences.

Among the selected courses for 2025, the theme of "Volcanic Landforms" is especially recommended. "Grandfather Volcano's Story," designed for elementary school children, takes participants to visit Xiaoyoukeng and Zhuzihu to learn about post-volcanic activity and landform changes. Students directly observe Usawa canes and wheel trees to understand the "altitude migrating phenomenon" caused by the northeast monsoon. Additionally, participants visit local farmers to learn about the agricultural transformation process in Zhuzihu and tour the Zhuzihu Ponlai Rice Foundation Seed Field Story House to understand the connection between volcanic geology and agriculture.

Adults are recommended to join "Journey of Earth-Shaking: Shanchiao Fault," learning about geological activities through field exploration, landscape observation, and educational games. During the activity, staff arrange for participants to mimic fault movements, sing educational songs, and cut layered cakes as interactive methods to understand different fault types in an enjoyable learning environment.

The courses emphasize teaching through sensory experiences and interactive activities, providing valuable experiences distinctly different from classroom learning. Registration is available online and must be submitted 15 working days before the activity date. Participants need to arrange their own transportation, meals, and some venue fees. School groups typically schedule courses shortly after the beginning of the semester and conduct outdoor learning throughout different months of the term. For the general public, groups of 16 to 50 people can register, or individuals can follow the Yangmingshan National Park fan page to stay informed about public activity sessions for individual registration.

Participants should prepare proper equipment, including warm jackets, non-slip shoes, hiking poles, drinking water, and rain gear, while avoiding sandals or slippers. Mountain weather may change fast, and the ground can become slippery, requiring special attention to safety and mosquito prevention measures. Most importantly, entering the mountains with respect for nature will yield the best learning and travel experiences and ensure a safe return home.
