Deep Experience of Kenting Life - Kenting Drifter Program Makes You the Most Down-to-Earth Local Resident!

What began as an ordinary afternoon transformed when attendees listened intently as speaker Su, Zi-jun shared her transformative experience participating in the "Four South Penghu Islets Intern Villager Program." This innovative program enables young people to experience authentic island life through work-exchange accommodations, fostering meaningful interactions with the locals and providing genuine insights into offshore island communities.

The presentation sparked enthusiasm and inspiration among the staff of Kenting National Park Headquarters, catalyzing the development of the "Ecotourism Kenting Drifting Youth Program." This program aims to recruit nature-enthusiastic youth to engage in community-based ecotourism initiatives during summer periods, contributing innovative perspectives to local development while exploring new connections between community engagement and sustainable management practices.

Kenting National Park Headquarters has championed community ecotourism for two decades, with Sheding Community serving as the pioneering participant in these initiatives. However, aging community demographics present challenges as long-serving resident interpreters advance in age, creating talent succession gaps and knowledge transfer difficulties. Youth participation addresses these challenges by introducing fresh energy while exploring innovative operational models that align local engagement with sustainable development objectives.

The 2024 "Ecotourism Kenting Drifting Youth Program" launched its pilot phase in Sheding Community. The inaugural participant, a student from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, had previously engaged with Kenting National Park Headquarters' "Junior Interpreter Activities," developing passionate interests in natural ecology. During her residency with local interpreters, she contributed to butterfly monitoring efforts, learned ecological interpretation techniques, and gained comprehensive understanding of Hengchun Peninsula's natural and cultural environments, revitalizing community dynamics.

The "Kenting Drifting Youth Program" fundamentally aims to help young people rediscover Kenting's multifaceted character through immersive local participation. Kenting transcends typical tourist perceptions of sunshine, beaches, and waves, encompassing lowland forests, nature trails, distinctive desert-like landscapes, and remarkable ecological diversity. The program endeavors to guide youth transformation from passive tourists to active participants, enabling them to become integral components of local narratives.

In 2025, Houwan and Longshui communities joined the project. Houwan Community seeks to recruit ocean-passionate youth to advance marine ecotourism promotion, while Longshui Community targets individuals interested in rural lifestyles and agricultural experiences, anticipating their creative contributions and ecological perspectives will enhance community development. The program particularly welcomes youth possessing transportation capabilities and marketing or creative skills, whose involvement will strengthen community visibility and connectivity.

While participation duration remains limited, these meaningful interactions are expected to forge future pathways connecting youth career development with community sustainability, unlocking enhanced possibilities for Taiwan's ecotourism sector and local regeneration initiatives.
