Shei-Pa National Park Salmon 123 Parent-Child Experience: Let’s Become Guardians of the Formosan Landlocked Salmon!

In the "Salmon 123 - National Treasure Fish Conservation Experience Activity" held at Shei-Pa National Park, parents and children gathered at the Taiwan Salmon Eco Center for an educational and entertaining natural experience. Through vivid explanations and hands-on activities, both adults and children could personally participate and transform into guardians of the Formosan landlocked salmon.

This experience activity involves three hands-on activities. The first simulated selecting healthy salmon eggs, using Water gel beads commercially available to simulate fish eggs. Children used pipets for an "egg picking" experience, learning about the importance of careful selection in salmon breeding work. Children were highly enthusiastic and eager to try, with exclamations and laughter constantly heard during the operation process.

The second activity simulated salmon release, having everyone put fake fish into specially made bags, which were then filled with water and tied securely. The bags were placed on iron frames and participants walked together to the river for release. During this process, children participated enthusiastically, with some children even competing to carry the iron frames and exclaiming "It's lighter than a schoolbag!"

The third activity simulated ecological monitoring called "lying on the river for fish counting." Since real river-lying locations (such as Qijiawan River) are ecological protected areas that cannot be entered freely, the activity used the lawn for simulation. Children lay prone on puzzle mats while wearing goggles and reading fish species instruction cards, simulating hand gestures to communicate observed fish species and quantities, with continuous laughter throughout the process.

Since its establishment in 1992, Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters discovered through surveys that there were only about 200 individuals of the Formosan landlocked salmon surviving, making the species a candidate of near extinction.Subsequently, after 4 years of successful breeding and release, and cooperation with local Atayal tribes for patrolling, the number of the Formosan landlocked salmon has now increased to ten thousand—40 times the previous number, showing remarkable conservation results.

This "Salmon 123" experience activity takes about 2 hours. Originally designed to support 3-day 2-night camps and educational institution environmental education needs as a half-day experience, it has gradually been promoted as a regular activity for consecutive holidays or national holidays since 2023, becoming one of the popular parent-child recreational experiences in the Wuling area.

Families wanting to participate can follow the "Shei-Pa National Park" fan page for activity information. Through this educational and interactive experience activity, it is hoped that every family member can understand and jointly protect Taiwan's precious national treasure fish—the Formosan landlocked salmon—in the process of getting close to nature.

Map Of The Park

map of Shei-Pa
Shei-Pa National Park covers an area of 76,850 hectares on the central Taiwan range, slightly to the north of central Taiwan. This is a region of magnificent mountains: within the park are 51 peaks over 3,000 meters high. It is a mostly wild and undeveloped area with a range of wildlife that includes many rare and endemic species. The park was founded to protect and study this splendid wilderness, maintaining the natural environment and all forms of life it includes. Conservation is therefore the first priority for Shei-Pa National Park, and a large proportion of its land is protected as Conversation Area, or Special Scenic Area, with limited access for ordinary visitors.
