Step into Urban Oases: Explore the Diverse Charms of National Natural Parks
Taiwan boasts 9 national parks and 1 national natural park. While the names of national parks and national natural parks sound similar, there are distinct differences between them!
According to Article 6 of the National Park Law, areas featuring special landscapes, important ecosystems, biodiversity habitats, or significant cultural assets and historic sites with educational and recreational value may be designated as national parks for long-term preservation by the nation. Starting in 2010, smaller areas still requiring protection have been incorporated under the designation of "National Natural Parks."
Shoushan National Natural Park stands as the country's first national natural park, overseeing both Taichung Metropolitan Park and Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park, which are introduced below.
Shoushan National Natural Park
Situated on the southwest side of Kaohsiung City, this area encompasses Banpingshan, Big and Small Guishan Mountains, Shoushan, and Cihou Mountain, creating a green ecological corridor that connects the urban area with the coast. The region features unique limestone geology where most flora and fauna struggle to survive, yet it nurtures over sixty percent of native plant species, offering different scenic views throughout the four seasons. This location serves as Kaohsiung residents' backyard garden, where visitors can observe migrating raptors during spring and autumn, witness Taiwan Amorphophallus blooming in summer, and explore limestone caves under the guidance of patrol guards from November through April of the following year.
Taichung Metropolitan Park
Positioned on Taichung's Dadu Plateau, the park provides eastward views of the basin and surrounding mountain systems, while offering westward vistas of the Taiwan Strait, creating diverse landscapes. The park maintains high coverage of green vegetation, preserves grasslands and natural ponds, and attracts various bird species.Within the park, various native plants are cultivated, including endangered species such as bean pear and evergreen pear, providing the public with opportunities to observe rare tree species up close. The park also preserves remnants of military bunkers, showcasing the historical aspects of its military past.
Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park
Located in Nanzih District of Kaohsiung City with convenient transportation access, this park represents a rare large-scale green space within the urban environment. The park features grasslands, ecological ponds, and shaded walking trails that provide habitat for various birds and butterflies. Each season reveals different charms: March brings the leaf-dropping season for Honduras Mahogany, while May evenings offer opportunities to observe fireflies.
The park also includes bicycle paths, children's playgrounds, and sports facilities, with guided tours and family activities frequently held on weekends, allowing visitors to relax while learning about nature.
Experiencing nature doesn't require traveling far to high mountains; these urban oases await your exploration. Why not invite friends to visit the nearest national natural park and enjoy the ecological surprises that await within the city!
