Forwarded message from the Central Region Maintenance Engineering Branch, Highway Bureau
Due to the influence of a strong continental cold air mass at 9:00 a.m. today (Jan. 8), sleet has begun to fall on high-mountain roads above 3,000 meters in elevation, with temperatures remaining below freezing. The road surface on Provincial Highway 14A, from Kunyang (29K) to Songxuelou (33K), is wet and icy.
To ensure road user safety, traffic on this section will be restricted to vehicles equipped with snow chains only starting from 9:00 a.m. today.
Reminder to road users:
High-mountain weather conditions are severe and change rapidly. Traffic control measures on the restricted section will be adjusted flexibly based on actual conditions. In accordance with the 2026 Mt. Hehuan Snow Season Regulations, when snowfall or road icing occurs, Class A and Class B large passenger vehicles, trucks (large and small) exceeding 3.5 metric tons, and all types of machinery and slow-moving vehicles (including large heavy motorcycles) are prohibited from entering the controlled section.
Road users planning to travel on Provincial Highway 8 or Provincial Highway 14A are advised that mountain road conditions during the snow season are difficult to predict. Please avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Before departure, ensure that appropriate personal equipment and vehicle snow chains are prepared, closely monitor weather forecasts and traffic information, and plan alternative travel routes in advance to respond to changing conditions.
For the latest road conditions, please listen to radio traffic broadcasts and pay attention to information displayed on roadside Changeable Message Signs (CMS). The public may also check real-time road conditions through the Highway Bureau’s Provincial Highway Traffic Information System ([Link]), download the “Happiness Highway App,” or call the following numbers for updates:
