Following the April 3 (0403) earthquake, Provincial Highway 8 (Central Cross-Island Highway) and its surrounding scenic spots and trails have undergone extensive repair and restoration. After more than a year of reconstruction, steady progress has been made on both road and trail rehabilitation works. Recently, the Taroko Engineering Office of the Highway Bureau has relocated the Tianxiang traffic control point eastward to Lüshui. In coordination with this adjustment, the Taroko National Park Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as Taroko N. P. HQ) has partially reopened selected areas and trails within the Lüshui Recreation Area to provide visitors with limited sightseeing opportunities.
According to Taroko N. P. HQ, the areas currently open to the public include the Lüshui Exhibition Hall along Provincial Highway 8, the first approximately 250 meters of the Lüshui Trail, the first approximately 450 meters of the Lüshui Wenshan Trail, the surrounding platforms near the exhibition hall, and the Lüshui parking area. In preparation for the partial reopening, trail volunteers were invited to assist with trail maintenance, and interpretive volunteers have completed additional training programs. Following the reopening, interpretive volunteers will be stationed at the Lüshui Exhibition Hall on weekends and public holidays to provide visitor information and guided interpretation services. Visitors may plan a dedicated visit to Lüshui or take advantage of waiting periods during traffic control releases to explore the area.
Taroko N. P. HQ emphasized that the Lüshui area is not fully open. Only existing facilities with relatively stable structures and manageable risks have been partially reopened following safety assessments, and use is limited to daytime hours only. These measures are designed to balance the phased reopening process with public travel and sightseeing needs during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday period. Visitors are reminded to strictly comply with all traffic control measures and to refrain from entering any non-open trails or restricted areas, in order to jointly maintain safety and order.
✔ Lüshui Trail (First Section – approx. 250 meters)
Starting from the Lüshui entrance, the trail is open up to the small suspension bridge. Visitors must return along the same route at the 250-meter point. Estimated one-way walking time: approximately 15 minutes.
✔ Lüshui Wenshan Trail (First Section – approx. 450 meters)
Starting from the Lüshui entrance, the trail is open up to Tuoyou’en. Visitors must return along the same route at the 450-meter point. Estimated one-way walking time: approximately 30 minutes.
✔ Lüshui Exhibition Hall and Surrounding Platforms (Daytime)
Interpretive volunteers are stationed on weekends and public holidays to assist visitors with inquiries and guided interpretation services.
Taroko N. P. HQ urges visitors planning to visit Taroko during the Lunar New Year holiday to check traffic control schedules and the latest opening information in advance, follow on-site guidance, and observe proper mountain etiquette. The natural landscape is precious and hard-won; only through collective compliance with regulations can the achievements of phased reopening be sustained, ensuring that safety remains the shared foundation for experiencing the gorge.
