Following the reopening of the access forestry road to Dali and Datong Villages and the Liwu Mountain Trail, the Taroko National Park Headquarters (hereafter referred to as TNPH) announced that the Qianliyan Mountain Trail, located above Datong Village and renowned for its magnificent ocean views, has officially reopened.
Datong Village is a community of the Truku tribe. After being impacted by the April 3 (0403) earthquake and subsequent secondary disasters, the trail has now been restored and safety-enhanced through the joint efforts of village residents and TNPH. With reopening conditions fully met, hikers are warmly invited to return to the mountains and once again experience the spectacular scenery where mountains meet the sea.

Rebuilding After Earthquakes and Typhoons: Park and Village Moving Forward Together

The strong earthquake that struck Hualien on April 3, 2024 caused severe damage throughout the mountainous areas of Taroko National Park. In addition to disrupting transportation access to local villages, popular hiking trails—including Qianliyan Mountain—were forced to close due to landslides and terrain changes.
In response to hikers’ expectations and to help revitalize the village’s mountain-based eco-tourism industry, TNPH worked closely with Datong Village to carry out comprehensive trail safety improvements. After multiple site inspections and evaluations, restoration was completed in phases, including trail rehabilitation and reinforcement of hazardous sections.
Qianliyan Mountain, at an elevation of 1,624 meters, together with Liwu Mountain and Qingshui Mountain, is collectively known as the “Shakadang Three Heroes.” From its ridgeline, hikers can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the mouth of the Liwu River, making it a favorite destination among mountaineers.
Following the earthquake, significant terrain changes required targeted repairs. TNPH reinforced damaged trail foundations, while steeper sections were equipped with fixed ropes installed by village residents to assist climbers. Additional trail markers and safety ropes have also been added to improve route guidance and enhance hiking safety.
A Friendly Reminder: Safety First, Living in Harmony with Nature
TNPH reminds visitors that although the Liwu Mountain and Qianliyan Mountain trails have reopened, the impacts of the earthquake and typhoons remain visible in the mountain environment, and certain risks persist.
Hikers are advised to assess their physical condition before entering the mountains. When passing through rocky sections, scree slopes, or steep terrain, please follow the designated trail markers and use the newly installed ropes. Do not enter unstable or landslide-prone areas.
The reopening of Qianliyan Mountain marks another milestone in the restoration of the Dali–Datong mountain area. During the upcoming 228 Peace Memorial Day long weekend, visitors are welcome to explore Dali and Datong Villages, experience local culture, and ascend Qianliyan Mountain to witness the resilient rebirth of Taroko.
