In search of the relic species from the Jurassic period Guanwu Formosan Salamander

The Guanwu Salamander (Hynobius fuca Lai and Lue) discovered in Guanwu district in SPNP in 1996 is a living fossil, a species that came from 180 million years ago when dinosaurs moved around. They are few in number and move in secrecy. In order to understand the life of this precious salamander, Shei-pa National Park Headquar ters commissioned experts to survey and make a documentary film “In Search of the Relic Species from the Jurassic Period” by film director Chin-fa Chen. The team searched through the mountains to video the real life of them, hoping to establish an effective conservation method for them to survive before the Earth’s environment deteriorates drastically. The film unveils the secret life of the precious Guanwu Salamanders, and becomes a significant milestone for the conservation achievement in Taiwan.
