Kinmen National Park Administration Successfully Revitalizes Battle History, Re-Presenting Mesmerizing History - Boat-Shaped Fort in Jinshan Houbian and Lieyu Nanshantou Camp Four

At the beginning of this year (2019), the Boat-Shaped Fortress in Kinmen National Park became open to the public for the first time and attracted many visitors. This fortress, unique to the military cultural landscape of Kinmen, is located on the Sanshanli Coastline of Hushan Bay in Houbian, Kinmen. The fortress is famous for its likeness to a battleship, also, due to its geographical location, it is called “Hushan Fortress” by locals. This is a stronghold that supports the flanks of “Han She Hua” and “Houbian”. The fortress can also deceive the enemy. It is not only an iconic military coastal landscape on the eastern Kinmen peninsula, but its unique shape and setting on the beach, as well as the unobstructed view of the coastline it allows completely overturns the people’s first impression of the fortress.

The Kinmen National Park Administration has set up an exhibition on the second floor of the Boat-Shaped Fortress that introduces the special battlefield historical background of Kinmen. It also helps the public to gain a deeper understanding of the unique military landscape that was created in Kinmen over the generations due to its historical context and geographical conditions. After its restoration, the Boat-Shaped Fortress was officially opened by the Kinmen National Park Administration on January 18, 2019. On the day of its opening, Platoon Leader Wu Zhong-an, who was stationed at the Boat-Shaped Fortress in 1980, was specially invited to share his memories of those days, bringing together everyone's feelings of Kinmen and passing down the heritage of historical memory. Since its opening, the now popular travel destination has attracted visitors from the public and military fans during long holidays.

Aside from the popular Boat-Shaped Fortress on the east coast of Kinmen, the Lieyu Nanshantou Camp Four has also received much attention. Its top activity is the exclusive room escape game offered on site. This is the southernmost coastal military base in Lieyu. Inside the camp are two artillery forts, seven underground pillboxes with loopholes, and a command post. Such structure and circulation paths are rarely seen in Kinmen; it now also offers an interactive experience—“The Room Escape” game.

In the initial stage, the safety of the resident commentator and diversifying the use of the space were taken into consideration, hence the design concept full of interactive activities was born. In the preparation stage, the team visited many puzzle games around the country to see how they organized their activities, and finally designed a room escape game that contains concepts of the Kinmen military and is also imbued with the spirit of edutainment. There are eight levels in the tunnel. After completing the missions, the participants receive eight puzzle pieces, which are used to enter the final secret space to obtain the final treasure.

The activity is interesting and lively, with the missions providing a wealth of content, covering the local history, culture, and natural ecology of Kinmen. In the activities, there is a task that simulates the night shooting of the national army, where the participants must use the corresponding numbers to successfully get the password. Each mission level is designed according to the terrain and features of the site to fully encapsulate the military site experience. For anyone interested in the games or guided tours, please book three days in advance.
