One Year after the 0403 Hualien Earthquake: Ministry of the Interior Actively Promotes Post-Earthquake Reconstruction of Taroko National Park

It has been one year since the date of the 0403 Hualien earthquake, during which Taroko National Park was badly shaken by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, damaging both the environment and people’s mentality. The Ministry of the Interior immediately formed a cross-departmental reconstruction team, investing in recovery and securing a NT$ 3 billion budget for park reconstruction. During the reconstruction period, the Park was hit by successive typhoons, making the reconstruction project even more challenging.

Currently, the Taroko Visitor Center and attractions west of Xibao such as the Xiaoqilai Trail and Mt. Hehuan East Peak have reopened, while parts of Tianxiang area and recreational areas along the Su-hua Highway are expected to reopen in the first half of 2025. Beyond physical restoration, the Taroko National Park Headquarters has organized concerts and environmental education activities, mobilizing volunteers to restore the ecosystem, and hoping to heal hearts through culture and nature.

In the future, high-tech geological surveys will be conducted as a basis for engineering work. Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has tasked the National Land Management Agency and the National Air Service Corps to jointly shoulder reconstruction responsibilities. The Ministry of the Interior emphasizes the importance of respecting nature and sustainable development, collaborating with people of Hualien and various sectors to promote responsible tourism and jointly protect this precious land.
