The complete Xueshan main peak route covers approximately 22 kilometers round trip, requiring about 14 hours for a single-day round trip (depending on individual fitness). This poses high challenges to both physical fitness and judgment. The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters points out that if climbers have not reached the Sanliujiu Hut by 11 AM, their physical fitness will be unable to handle the subsequent summit climb. It’s advisable to descend immediately to avoid the risks of altitude sickness from continued elevation gain and descending late in darkness.
Although the number of people choosing single-day round trips to Xueshan has decreased in recent years, it remains a popular route. Poor weather conditions or delayed schedules can easily lead to getting lost or requiring rescue situations, with multiple similar incidents having occurred. The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters urges climbers to carefully assess their physical fitness, emphasizing that Xueshan will always be there. Climbers may prepare better physically to give themselves another chance to climb Xueshan in the future.
In the future, staff at Qika and Sanliujiu Huts will strengthen advocacy efforts. If persuasion is ineffective and climbers still force their way up the mountain, resulting in mountaineering disasters that cost social resources, they will be banned from entering the Park for three years under the National Park Law and referred to local governments for disposition according to regulations, ensuring mountain safety and mountaineering order.
