Planting Hope: Taroko National Park Will Plant Native Species at Hehuan North Peak 3246 Saddle to Protect Alpine Ecology

To improve the problem of vegetation loss and exposed ground caused by human trampling at the Hehuan North Peak 3246 saddle (a.k.a. Xiaoxi Campground), Taroko National Park Headquarters has collaborated with National Taiwan University Highland Experimental Farm to cultivate seedlings of native species such as alpine rose and Taiwan barberry. Conservation volunteers were mobilized to plant the seedlings on June 21-22, 2025.

This year's project builds on last year's successful results, expanding to the planting of 300 native plants and removal of invasive species, aiming to mitigate the exposed areas and restore alpine ecology.

Taroko National Park Headquarters emphasizes that Xiaoxi Campground is not a legal camping ground, where people are not allowed to camp or cook. Alpine ecology is fragile, and once damaged, recovery may take an extremely long time. Taroko National Park Headquarters will collaborate with the Seventh Special Police Corps to strengthen patrols and crack down on violations. Mountaineers are advised to follow Leave No Trace principles and National Park Law, reduce environmental interference, and jointly protect the natural landscape and ecological resources of the Hehuanshan area.
