我在電影 ＜魔戒＞ 裡看到深邃古老的森林，令人嚮往，在真實生活中，是否也有那樣的美景存在呢？

當然了! 電影當中那雲霧瀰漫的森林，其實就是高山的「霧林帶」。台灣中海拔山地的區域，一年之中有絕大多數的日子，水氣容易蓄積，形成多雲霧的環境。

In the movie “The Lord of the Rings” I saw some ancient and deep forests. I am so attracted to them that I can’t help but wonder if such beautiful places really exist in reality.

That’s for sure. In fact, the cloudy and misty forests you see in the movies are known as “cloud forests”. In mid altitude mountainous regions in Taiwan, the small drops of rain don’t fall but form clouds, so these forests are almost permanently shrouded in mist and clouds.

聽起來好像是個很特別的地方呢！那麼，到了霧林帶我可以看到哪些植物和動物呢？

霧林帶可說是台灣生物資源的寶庫，物種特別繁多，像是有台灣國寶之稱的紅檜、扁柏，以及森林中隨處可見的的苔蘚、地衣都有其特殊的地位。此外，霧林帶的環境破壞現象較低海拔森林少 ，因此動物較為豐富，不但具有罕見的台灣原生大型哺乳動物和鳥類，更有許多囓齒類和鼩鼱的蹤跡。

Sounds like a very special place. So what kind of flora and　fauna do I expect to seein the cloud forests?

Cloud forests are arguably the treasure house of Taiwan. Difference species grow in abundance there: from the “national treasure” of Taiwan Red Cypress, Taiwan Cypress, to the moss and lichen that scatter all over the landscape. In addition, the area was relatively less damaged compared to low-altitude forests,so a lot more animals reside here, including some native large mammals and birds, as well as some rodents and shrews.

確實相當值得一去。那麼在台灣，有哪些國家公園的雲霧帶地區較有特色呢？

其實各國家公園的霧林帶都各具特色。比如，雪霸國家公園中的觀霧地區終年雲霧縹緲，為觀賞雪山山脈聖稜線與雲霧風景的最佳景點之一；玉山國家公園的石山地區，則可眺望阿里山山脈山景、雲海、日落晚霞景觀及台灣獼猴生態。值得一提的是，低海拔的陽明山國家公園也能看得到霧，不過那是受東北季風的影響所造成的。

I think the place is definitely worth a visit. By the way, what national parks in Taiwan have these special cloud forests?

The cloud forests in Taiwan are special in their own ways. For example, Guanwu, Shei-pa National Park is shrouded in mist and clouds all year-round, making it one of the best places to observe the holy ridgeline and the misty clouds; at Shihshan area of Yushan National Park, you can observe Alishan, the cloud sea, the sunset as well as many Formosan macaques. Oh and interestingly enough, you can see clouds on Yangminshan,but that’s because of the northeast wind, not the mountain’s altitude.
